reading is a gift

My most coveted gifts have been books. As a young girl, I fondly recall hardcover copies of The Bobbsey Twins resting beneath the tree on Christmas morning. And as an adult, I gleefully added a biography or historical fiction title to my wish list. Of course, I couldn’t wait to read my new treasures during the snowy days which followed. A new book is indeed a treat to be savored and enjoyed but if that book comes from a dear friend or loved one, the experience becomes unbelievably special.

This holiday, consider a book-related gift. They offer a one-size-fits-all solution, capable of bringing a smile to any spouse, parent, child, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, cousin, neighbor, friend, co-worker, or teacher. Here is a holiday guide to get you in the spirit:

PRINTED BOOKS: Paperback and hardcover formats can be found at a local bookstore, the mall, or major online retailers such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
DIGITAL EBOOKS: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords allow you to gift ebooks which the recipient can then enjoy via e-reader or FREE downloadable reading app. Super trendy and very inexpensive!
E-READERS: Both the Kindle and Nook devices offer reliable, user-friendly interfaces along with the latest in digital technology. This may be a gift you want to give yourself!
GIFT CARDS: Available at most box stores and online outlets, they come in many denominations and are suitable for anyone on your list.
BOOKMARKS: Many sites offer personalization or go the extra mile and find a truly unique one at Etsy.
OTHER ITEMS such as book magnifiers, clip-on reading lights, and e-reader accessories can be found at major retailers or online, and they are the ultimate stocking stuffer for your favorite bibliophile!

Whether it be the work of an independent like me or that of a best-selling author, I encourage you to give the gift of knowledge, escape, or fantasy this season. And in case you feel a burning desire to do so, I happily grant permission to throw a little something extra into the cart for yourself. After all, you’ve been good this year and deserve it.

Happy Reading…
